EBENEZER: STONE OF HELP

Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily! Be a ROCK of refuge for me, a strong FORTRESS to save me! For you are my ROCK and my FORTRESS; and for your name's sake you lead me and guide me; (Psalm 31:2-3 ESV)

REMEMBER VERSE:

O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my FORTRESS, the God who shows me steadfast love. (Psalm 59:17 ESV)

DEVOTION

My wonderful, everlasting Lord deserves praise. But with the busyness of life, I FORGET to sing Him praise. I don’t REMEMBER the very specific ways He helps me — like the fact that He is my FORTRESS.

In ancient days this metaphor resounded in the people’s minds. A FORTRESS meant safety, security, and protection. But, we rarely face the threat of marauding invaders. At least not physical ones.

And yet, don’t we feel the ground shaking? The earth seems to be tilting on its axis as we deal with electronic invaders. As we listen to political divides tear people apart. As we watch God’s foundational truth be attacked.

If we don’t REMEMBER the Lord is our FORTRESS, the fear and vulnerability will destroy us. Let’s REMEMBER: we aren’t unprotected! Let’s run in our FORTRESS! Let’s praise Him!

  • Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised in the city of our God! His holy mountain, ... Within her citadels God has made himself known as a FORTRESS. Psalm 48:1, 3

  • PRAYER: Thank You for being my FORTRESS, my safe place, my protection, my security against attacks. Lord, please help me REMEMBER that I am not alone, because You surround me always.

  • Be to me a ROCK of refuge, to which I may continually come; you have given the command to save me, for you are my ROCK and my FORTRESS. Psalm 71:3

  • PRAYER: Lord, I am so grateful for You. Thank You for saving me, and for being my ROCK and my FORTRESS, no matter what happens.

QUESTIONS:

What areas of your life feel the most vulnerable? Where do you experience attacks?

How can you run to the Lord and let Him be your Fortress in those situations? Where do you need to stop fighting for yourself and allow the Lord to protect you instead?

CHALLENGE:

Read Psalm 59:17, our REMEMBER verse, again. The Psalmist finds the Lord his strength and SINGS PRAISES. Today, even if you’re attacked, sing praises to your FORTRESS!

Picture a fortress in your mind: a solid, secure place, set on a ROCK. You are set in that FORTRESS. Your enemies are below. Close your eyes. Rest. Let the Lord protect You. REMEMBER: God is your FORTRESS!

…he is my steadfast love and my FORTRESS, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield and he in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me. Psalm 144:2 ESV

All Scripture from the ESV. Emphasis added.

Tomorrow on Day 5 we will remember the God is our Refuge.
