EBENEZER: STONE OF HELP
… 'Take twelve STONES from here out of the midst of the Jordan … and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.'" ... Joshua said … “take up each of you a STONE upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, 'What do those STONES mean to you?' then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. … So these STONES shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever." Joshua 4:3, 5-7, 9, 21 ESV - 3
REMEMBER the days of old; consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will show you, your elders, and they will tell you. Deuteronomy 32:7
Before the Israelites entered the Land, Moses summed up all he knew from sitting with the Lord, and gave a whopper of a sermon. We call that the book of Deuteronomy. It’s an instruction manual to teach the people how to love and serve the Lord all their days.
The word REMEMBER is repeated often. So are instructions on passing faith on to children.
In fact, when God’s People miraculously pass through the Jordan river bed on dry ground during the spring floods, they pick up STONES to make a memorial (just like Ebenezer!) Why? So the kids will ask, “What’s that?” Then the parents will REMEMBER to tell them the amazing deeds of the Lord.
So find a child today— they don’t even have to be your own. Tell them the wonders of God. Don’t FORGET!
"Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you FORGET the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children's children.” Deuteronomy 4:9
PRAYER: Please help me pass on Your truth to the children in my life.
And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. Deuteronomy 6:6-7
PRAYER: Lord, please help me see opportunities to share your truth with the generations.
Jesus said, “Let the children come.” What kids can you welcome into your sphere of influence?
How can you make God’s truth known to the next generations?
What verse can you share with a child in your sphere?
Make a memorial— maybe just a rock on the table— and when kids ask what it is, tell them about the Lord.
All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. Psalm 22:27
