27. The Responsibility of the Empty Nest

Episode 27

Have you ever wondered what Jesus expects from you in your empty nest? I think He's given each of us precious gifts to share with others. But, why is it so hard to move past fear and discouragement to use them? What do you think your responsibilities are in this second half of life?

Proverbs 24:3-4 ESV- By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

It’s time to share all the precious and pleasant riches of knowledge and understanding that living with Jesus has taught us.

From our homes, post kids, and from our lives, in the second half, we have MUCH to share.

Luke 12:48b ESV ... Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.

Parable of the Talents

  • Matthew 25:14-15, 21, 29-30 ESV: "For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.

  • ... His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.'

  • ... For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

These verses tell me I have a RESPONSIBILITY in this new stage of life.

It’s NOT - my turn
Instead, it’s- “What’s next Lord?”

Whatever the Lord has given us, we are responsible to invest

Don’t look back, except for wisdom to share.

Can share wisdom from what we’ve done wrong.

Look and what He’s giving us NOW.

We don’t all have the same thing.

But we each have an important thing to grow the Kingdom!

We have the responsibility to use our:

TIME: what new place can you serve with this time? What ministry needs volunteers? Where in your church could you serve?

But think INVESTMENT not busy work.

SERVICE: grandchildren, aging parents.

Young moms, foster kids, foster families (certified baby sitter), ministries that tutor young kids, pro-life, unwed moms, care facilities.

COVID makes much of this hard. But hard doesn’t mean we can’t get creative and do it.

TEACH: what do you know? Who needs to know it?

Cooking, sewing, reading, home management, Bible study

EXPERIENCE: we need to share the lessons we’ve been given.

The Lord hands us these talents. These gifts. These RESPONSIBILITIES. What are we going to do with them? Quit looking back. You have talents to invest now. When He comes back, which He will, to settle accounts with us, and asks - What have you done, what will we say?

What will He say?

Let’s live in our second-half so He says, “'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.'”
